Afghanistan: Most women at Kabul prison accused of ‘moral’ crimes

From the article: “More than two-thirds of the 202 inmates are serving sentences of up to seven years for leaving their husbands, refusing to accept an arranged marriage, or leaving their parents’ home with a man of their choice, according to the prison’s director, Zaref Jan Naebi. The rest face theft, assault or narcotics charges. Two women are in jail on murder.”

Not much to say about this…other than it really pisses me off.

Iowa revises pregnant inmate restraint policy

From the article: “The Department of Corrections’ old policy allowed restraints to be used until inmates were admitted to a hospital for delivery. They were shackled as soon as 24 hours after giving birth.  The new policy prohibits inmates who have been pregnant for at least 22 weeks from being restrained unless they pose an immediate risk. Prisoners will remain unrestrained after giving birth until they are released from the hospital.”

Women in Prison Fare Better in China

From the article: “How women are treated in prison is a neglected topic worldwide, but fast-growing female prison populations mean that governments and international organizations must address the problem, said Mr. Kamm, speaking by telephone from San Francisco. With new amendments to female prisoners’ rights about to be introduced, China appeared to be doing well, though Mr. Kamm cautioned that far more needed to be known about conditions on the ground. Often, in China, laws look good on paper, but enforcement is, at best, patchy.”
