OH: Toledo inmate indicted in prison attack, murder

From the article: “Dustin Lynch, 26, was indicted on two counts of aggravated murder in the March 17 death of Arturo Lopez, 43. Lynch also was indicted on one count of felonious assault for a March 10 attack on inmate Christopher Trent, 40. The attacks were part of a rising wave of violence at the prison since 2011 when the population increased and inmates were doubled up in single cells.”

CA: 2 inmates die in separate Calif. prison incidents

From the article: “One inmate died and two others were seriously injured in a fight Monday that involved about 40 inmates at a state prison in the San Joaquin Valley, corrections officials said.”

OH: Ohio Department of Corrections says violent rules infractions for inmates have decreased

From the article: “Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections officials said violent rule infractions have decreased by 7.3 percent in state prisons since last year. But while the prison system is pleased with the modest results inside prisons, local experts say problems continue to persist with prison gangs when they reenter society.”

LA: Violence inside OPP sends dozens to the hospital each month

From the article: “Over the years, the issue of non-fatal violence in the jail has largely gone unnoticed. Statistics from the U.S. Justice Department show that at least 700 assaults occurred in the facilities last year. At least 32 stabbings were reported.”

IL: Prosecutor treating prison inmate death as murder

From the article: “The incident came during a violent, two-week stretch at Illinois prisons that included an attack this week on a chaplain and two guards at Menard that involved up to 15 inmates. That assault and a brutal beating last week of a Pontiac Correctional Center guard have roused lawmakers to criticize Gov. Pat Quinn’s closure last month of the Tamms prison that exiled violent inmates and other troublemakers from general-population penitentiaries.”

TX: Union: Prison guard shortage magnified at holiday

From the article: “A union for correctional officers in Texas says understaffing is putting guards at increased risk, especially around the holidays, during what has already been the deadliest year inside state prisons in more than a decade.”

 According to the article, TX corrections officers start at $28K.  After seven years, they still only make approximately $37K.  Of course, overtime can add a lot, but that’s still not much.
Further, inmate violence is on the rise, with ten inmate homicides this year, an increase from three total last year.

OH: Violent incidents getting worse at MANCI

This is the same institution where there was a recent death of an inmate.  According to the article, the inmate was stabbed 22 times.  The victim’s cellmate has already confessed to the death (unsurprising, since it happened after lockdown and they were the only two in there).  The officers’ union says that violent incidents have gone up at the institution and that they are understaffed; the Ohio prison system spokesperson says that violence has gone down at the institution since 2011.  Hmmm….read the article here and you be the judge.

Illinois prison guards predict more violence

“Guards at Illinois’ overcrowded and understaffed prisons predicted Thursday that Gov. Pat Quinn’s plan to close two penitentiaries will lead to more violence, like an incident where a guard was attacked and radioed for assistance, then had to fight off the inmate for five minutes before someone came to his aid.”
