Three prison officers sacked over Fiji ‘torture’ video

From the article: “Apparently shot using a mobile phone, it shows one handcuffed man being savagely beaten with batons and metal bars, and another being set upon by a dog as the animal’s handler urges it on.”

That sounds really bad, you say?  What sayeth the leader of Fiji:

Bainimarama has also dismissed concerns expressed by non-government organisations about the video, saying they “are paid by the international community to jump up and down every time we do something.”

Hmm…if by “do something” you mean “torture inmates,” then yes.  Guess we won’t be holding our breath to see some reforms.

What it’s like inside a Syrian government prison

From the article: “In a recent report, the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights documented methods of torture prevalent in regime prisons.  The report lists 957 cases of death from torture in 2012. The report lists the name and location of each death, and in many cases provides photos or video evidence and testimony from fellow inmates or family members who received the bodies. The tally includes 34 children and 17 women.”

Afghanistan: Karzai calls for prison torture investigation

From the article: “The Afghan government has set up a delegation to investigate reports of torture in Afghan-run detention facilities. The delegation, which was announced on Tuesday, was created two days after the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan published a report on the “ill-treatment of conflict-related detainees in Afghan custody.” The UN report, based on interviews with hundreds of detainees held in 89 facilities between October 2011 and October 2012, details 14 abusive practices, including the twisting of genitals, extracting fingernails and electric shock.”
