Inmate Suicides in South Carolina Prisons

I think Castro has prompted a lot of interest in inmate suicide in general.  This article discusses suicide in SC prisons.  Since 2000, SC experienced 38 suicides.  In the same time period, 24 inmates were the victims of homicides.  The homicide number seems a bit high to me, because we definitely have a higher suicide to homicide ratio in Ohio.

SC Death Row three-time killer’s death being investigated

From the article: “Kenneth Justus, a convicted three-time killer whose crimes symbolized to many a reason for the death penalty, has died on South Carolina’s Death Row while awaiting execution. Justus, 46, was found in his cell at the maximum security Lieber Correctional Institution Tuesday night, state Department of Corrections spokesman Clark Newsom said Wednesday.”

It could be a homicide, but this is actually somewhat hard to imagine.  In Ohio, our death row population is extremely quiet, as far as I know.  Despite their crimes, there’s not a lot of violence.  They are strictly managed, but they do have the ability to interact in small numbers and I’ve never heard of one seriously assaulting another.  Maybe it’s the gravity of the sentence that they share…

SC: Lee prison riots fuel a call for more funds

From the article: “Since April, inmates have taken over parts of the prison twice, capturing two outnumbered corrections officers and stabbing one. Wielding keys they made out of sawed-off parts of fiberglass shower stalls, inmates had slipped out of their dorms at night to pick up packages of drugs and cellphones that outsiders had thrown over the fences. Inmates used cellphones to coordinate the attacks on officers.”

Officials want to construct guard towers to keep watch for contraband being thrown over the fence, make repairs to facilities, and increase corrections’ officers salaries.

Cherokee Council to address ‘critical’ jail overcrowding

“The S.C. Department of Corrections has put Cherokee County Council on notice to remedy overcrowding at the detention center.

The Department of Corrections inspects state detention centers at least once a year, and during the most recent inspection of the Cherokee County jail, state inspectors noted numerous deficiencies mostly relating to a lack of bed space for the inmates. It prevents “staff from being able to properly separate and mange those various categories of persons detained,” according to a letter sent to council provided by the Department of Corrections.”
