Inmate gets liver transplant, questions raised about cost

“Questions are arising after the state spent several hundreds of thousands of dollars providing a Rhode Island inmate with a liver transplant.

27-year-old Jose Pacheco who is serving a 6 ½ year sentence at the ACI for robbery is the first Rhode Island inmate to receive an organ transplant. Pacheco received the transplant on August 1 at a Boston hospital where he is currently recovering. He was treated in Boston because Rhode Island Hospitals currently do not preform liver transplants.”

R.I. prison settles with Muslim inmates over religious concerns

“The state prison system has agreed to provide Muslim inmates with three meals a week containing meat prepared in keeping with their religious beliefs as part of the settlement of a lawsuit accusing the prison of violating their religious rights.”
