Four correctional officers injured in second NBCI incident since Friday

From the article: “The situation began with an apparently unprovoked assault on a correctional officer by one inmate. MD/US: LGBT inmates report sexual victimization at much higher percentages

From the article: “The national statistics play out like this: Among the heterosexual population, 1.2 percent of state and federal prison inmates and 1.2 percent of jail inmates reported sexual victimization by another inmate. Among those who reported their orientation as gay, lesbian, bisexual or “other” — which I assume includes the transgender community — 12.2 percent of prison inmates and 8.5 percent of jail inmates reported victimization by another inmate.”

Maryland Repeals Death Penalty

From the article: “Maryland officially became the sixth state in six years to repeal the death penalty Thursday. Gov. Martin O’Malley signed the repeal bill, checking off a major legislative priority in what he called, “the most productive legislative session in modern memory.”

Former Md. Prison Officer Pleads Guilty In Inmate Beating

Third Man Charged in Federal Inmate-Beating Probe in Maryland

From the article: “The vic­tim, Ken­neth Davis, was in hand­cuffs when he was beaten four times in a 24-hour period span­ning March 8 and 9, 2008. The inci­dent prompted high-profile state-level inves­ti­ga­tions and pros­e­cu­tions, with many offi­cers fired and nine charged crim­i­nally, though 2009 jury tri­als ended with acquittals.”

Md. inmate homicides highest since ’01

From the article: “Inmate-on-inmate homicides at Maryland state prisons spiked in 2012 to seven, the highest number in at least 11 years, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said Tuesday.”

But what says the MD prison system?

Guilty plea suggests inmate beatings were institutionalized at Maryland prison

From the article: “What Lohr admit­ted to, though, sug­gests Davis’ beat­ing was not an iso­lated inci­dent involv­ing a few bad offi­cers – as Gary May­nard, Maryland’s sec­re­tary of the Depart­ment of Pub­lic Safety and Cor­rec­tional Ser­vices (DPSCS) has con­tended in another legal pro­ceed­ing involv­ing another beaten inmate — but was instead an insti­tu­tion­al­ized, extra-legal prac­tice in which newly hired cor­rec­tional offi­cers were schooled by their colleagues.”

Inmate Homicides

In Mississippi, an inmate who was involved in the deadly Mississippi riot in May at a CCA owned prison may change his plea to guilty.  He is alleged to have assisted inmates with gaining access to the roof of the facility, where they beat an officer to death. In Maryland, 32 year old Eubanks, in prison on a rape charge, asphyxiated 53 year old Abdullah, also in on a rape charge.  Guilty plea for Md. inmate in fellow prisoner’s murder.
In Pennsylvania, an inmate died after a fight at a federal prison.  Inmate death after NE Pa. prison fight probed.
In Minnesota, one woman attempted to murder another female inmate by choking her with a rope.  The cause?  She said she was “tired of nitpicking.”  Woman in Waseca federal prison admits choking fellow inmate with rope.
