India: Inmate kills guard, escapes from jail in Sriganganagar

From the article: “A 52-year-old man, deputed as a security guard at an open jail in Sriganganagar’s Jaitsar area was found murdered outside a barrack on Saturday morning. Police said that an inmate of the jail murdered the security guard and escaped. The police have launched a search for him.”

Inmate Suicide Casts Shadow On Model Indian Jail

From the NPR article: “India’s Tihar Jail is a land of bakeries and carpentry shops, where inmates compete in music contests, take classes and perform intensive Buddhist meditation as part of their rehabilitation.  Tihar Jail is also a vast, overcrowded facility, crammed with people awaiting trial who sleep on concrete floors, face daily threats from other prisoners and are shaken down for bribes from their poorly paid jailers, according to human rights lawyers and former inmates there.”

The facility has 12,199 inmates in it – tough to imagine any facility that big being a “model” anything, or that there is effective governance or oversight.

And let’s not kid ourselves about the inmate charged with rape who “hanged himself” while his three cellies “slept”…

India: Skilled inmate just paid Rs 74 for a day’s work, finds SC

“A skilled labourer has to be paid a minimum wage of Rs 285 for a day’s work. But, if s/he is convicted for an offence and renders the same work inside the jail as a convict, s/he would get only Rs 74.

The Supreme Court stumbled upon this wage disparity while deciding an appeal by a woman convict who complained that she had not been paid by the Tihar Jail authorities for the work she rendered at the prison dispensary for more than three years.”
