Idaho prison officials seek relief for overheated inmates

From the article: “As the temperature reached 100 degrees for the fifth straight day Tuesday, inmates in one wing of the Idaho State Correctional Institution have found conditions almost intolerable as a lone swamp cooler has proved ineffective.”

One commenter noted, “Committing felonies and getting incarcerated sucks.  As it should.”

To you, sensitive soul that you are, I say this: overheated conditions are extremely dangerous for inmates who are on psychotropic medications, which many are, given the increased likelihood of mental illness, and that heat has caused the death of inmates.  It’s not just about inmates feeling a little uncomfortable; it’s about providing constitutional levels of adequate care.

As we should.

ID: Idaho prison contract up for bid

This is kind of big.

From the article: “Idaho prison leaders are looking for a new company to run the state’s largest prison after Corrections Corporation of America admitted to understaffing and overbilling for its work operating the Idaho Correctional Center.”

I can’t repost the rest of the article due to copyright laws, but you should read it.  Here.

ID: Prison Company: Workers Falsified Staffing Records

Another strike against the Corrections Corporation of America.  From the article: “The records show hours when prison staff and guards were supposedly staffing security posts, but those positions were actually vacant. Workers involved will be reprimanded, and the company told the Department of Correction it will reimburse the state.”

Of course, pretty sure state workers also falsify records at times, but is it worse at CCA-run facilities?  Don’t know.

ID: Inmates claim private prison falsifies staff logs

From the article: “According to the lawsuit, guards at the prison usually work 12-hour shifts. The inmates contend that at the end of a shift, CCA managers would order the guards to work an additional half-hour or so of overtime, and that way their names would be on the following shift log as well, even if they only stayed for a small portion of that shift. As a result, the inmates contend in the lawsuit, some guard names are listed on the staff logs as working for 36 or even 48 hours straight.”

Idaho inmates claim gangs run prison

A lawsuit filed by eight inmates in the Idaho DOC claims that a prison operated by the Corrections Corporation of America is essentially run by gangs.  An investigation by the DOC following a violent assault of an inmate indicated that CCA staff were not following appropriate policies.  In addition, prison staff began housing gang members together in cell blocks in an effort to reduce violence; however, this reportedly resulted in staff having to negotiate cell placements with the gangs and losing the ability to enforce rule violations due to threats and intimidation.

Court reinstates inmate’s sex claim against guard

From the article: “Sexual contact between a prison guard and an inmate should be presumed to be coercive, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.”

“A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated a claim by an Idaho prison inmate who said a female guard groped him sexually after he tried to break off a romantic, but nonsexual, relationship with her.  A district court had ruled that two incidents in which the guard allegedly touched the prisoner’s genitals were consensual because the romantic relationship had not clearly ended.”

I honestly had no idea that sexual contact between an inmate and a guard could ever be considered consensual.  How is this even a question?

Idaho women’s prison sees second inmate suicide in two years

“An inmate at Idaho’s Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center apparently committed suicide yesterday; 51-year-old Cindy R. Jones was found hanging in a shower area at the women’s prison at 4:38 p.m., and paramedics were unable to resuscitate her. It was the second suicide in two years at the women’s prison; the last was in November of 2011. Idaho Department of Correction spokesman Jeff Ray said since 2006, seven inmates have committed suicide in Idaho state prison facilities; three more Idaho state prison inmates committed suicide while being held in private prisons or county jails.”
