Sydney prison officer smuggled contraband

From the article: “The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has found activities officer Karaha Pene Te-Hira brought goods into the prison for two inmates over a six-month period last year.  The contraband included shoes, food, mobile phones and steroids.”

Drug use in Ohio’s prisons spiked in ’12

From the article: “…Testing done annually in October by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction found 3.32 percent of inmates tested positive for drugs. The vast majority used marijuana, but there were positives for opiates, cocaine and alcohol as well.”

NY: Family of inmate who died at Onondaga County Justice Center calls for oversight, accountability

OH: Lake Erie Correctional Institution prisoner dies of suspected overdose

This prison was the first in the nation to be sold to a private company (Corrections Corporation of America).  It was recently heavily criticized in an internal management audit report by the prison department.

Poor report card on prison drugs

“The Australian National Council on Drugs says Hobart’s Risdon prison is not putting enough resources into drug and alcohol programs.

The council commissioned the National Alcohol Research Centre to look at the breadth of programs available in each state and territory to deal with drug and alcohol issues in prisons.

The report found the focus is more on blocking drugs than helping prisoners break dependency patterns.”

Indiana Prison Drug Ring: Oscar Perez, Justin Addler Allegedly Ran Heroin, Methamphetamine Operation

“Two inmates housed at different Indiana prisons ran a drug ring that distributed methamphetamine, heroin and other drugs thanks to cellphones smuggled in by guards, according to a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday that charges 40 people in connection with the scheme.”
