Delaware prison sex abuse agreement in dispute

From the article: “In addition to adequate staffing levels, the ACLU is concerned that DOC officials do not have written policies and procedures in place to ensure compliance with all provisions of the consent agreement stemming from a lawsuit in which a female inmate claimed she was raped by a prison guard in 2008. State officials settled that underlying case and now argue that the ACLU is making unfounded assertions that they are not complying with the consent agreement.”

DE: Poisoned prisoners take DOC officials to court

From the article: “The men say Apgar put Ajax or Comet on half a loaf of bread, and then gave it to another inmate to put in the common area.  In the handwritten complaint, Campbell said he retrieved the bread and took it back to his cell, June 5. “Me, Joseph Rushing, Tevon Savage got very sick after eating the bread,” he wrote.  “C/O James Apgar came to room 309 and stated, ‘I hope y’all enjoy that homemade gritty bread because you people are always stealing,’” Campbell wrote.”

DE: DOC faces class action lawsuit

According to the article, a class action lawsuit has been filed against the Delaware DOC for holding inmates past their release date.  “The suit asserts it is not uncommon for individuals with poor English-speaking skills and inmates with mental health illnesses to be held for days or weeks longer than their sentence requires.”

Inmate labor flaws exposed

From the article: “State correction officials declared last month they found no “purposeful misconduct” when concluding their investigation of a prison work-release program that came under scrutiny when inmates were found working on a lawmaker’s family farm.But interviews and documents obtained by The News Journal cast doubts on the credibility of the state investigation into the Department of Correction’s Sussex County day-labor program.”

Investigation into inmate labor program finds lax practices

“A nearly two-month investigation by the Delaware Department of Correction into an inmate day-labor program in Sussex County has found that the near lack of documentation involving offenders who went out for single-day work results from decades of lax practices and procedures that were carried forward unchanged — not because of “purposeful misconduct” by department employees.”
