AU: Prisoners up 40% in 10 years

From the article: “The crime rate in Victoria has decreased, but the rates for offences against the person, offences against good order and drug offences have all increased.”

From what I can see, that’s a common theme internationally and across the US.

Australia: Doubling of indigenous in prisons alarms leaders

From the article: “Aboriginal leaders have warned of a crisis in the justice system with an explosion in the black prison population, a spike in the number of juveniles being detained and continuing high numbers of deaths in custody.”

Sydney prison officer smuggled contraband

From the article: “The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has found activities officer Karaha Pene Te-Hira brought goods into the prison for two inmates over a six-month period last year.  The contraband included shoes, food, mobile phones and steroids.”

Australia: Indigenous-only jail could provide model for NT

From the article: “‘The actual design inside is particularly related to the cultural areas throughout the Kimberley region,” [the superintendent] said.  ‘The houses are designed in clusters for each of the family groups or community groups.  So for example people from the same community can be housed in together as part of a support network.'”

Union calls for more prison officers for Wooroloo

According to the article, “the Inspector of Custodial Services Neil Morgan yesterday released a report on the prison which found the facility operated well but too many prisoners were under-employed.”  A union representative links the lack of training opportunities for inmates back to inadequate staffing at the facility and makes a plea for the government to provide more funding for the facility.

Prison guards being investigated for corruption at Long Bay by ICAC

According to the article, a Warden has been “stood down” as a result of a corruption investigation, which I assume means fired or placed on administrative leave.  The article states that the “inquiry is examining allegations that mobile phones, steroids and expensive sneakers were smuggled in for inmates.  It will also explore whether inmates were paying officers $500 to be placed in cells on their own.”

Prison officers ordered back to work after snap strike

According to this article, Australian prison officers went on strike to protest proposed budget reductions.  I am not certain how this works.  Do they simply lock down the inmates in their cells?  I assume (or hope!) a skeleton crew of staff remain to feed the inmates, respond to medical emergencies, etc.

Poor report card on prison drugs

“The Australian National Council on Drugs says Hobart’s Risdon prison is not putting enough resources into drug and alcohol programs.

The council commissioned the National Alcohol Research Centre to look at the breadth of programs available in each state and territory to deal with drug and alcohol issues in prisons.

The report found the focus is more on blocking drugs than helping prisoners break dependency patterns.”

CLP wants alcoholic offender prison farms

It is not entirely clear to me what the connection is between alcoholism and farming (…grains?), but they are considering mandatory rehabilitation farms for “chronic alcoholic offenders.”  I am no farmer, but the likelihood of this farm having any sort of a real harvest seems markedly low.
