Here’s three articles I found discussing recidivism rates and the causes for their decreases and increases.

The Australian in January 2009 discussing recidivism rates from 2003-2008, stating that Victoria and Tasmania were the only states to show a decrease (with Tasmania’s dropping from 39% to 36.1%, and the national average at 38.2%)

The Mercury in January 2011 discussing the sharp decrease in Tasmania’s recidivism rate from 2009-2010 (from 36.4% to 31.7%, citing the national average as 37.6%), and Nick McKim claiming that this decrease is due to a massive 17% increase in community-based sentencing to keep people out of prison.

The Mercury in August 2010 discussing the work of charities designed to prevent recidivism (which claims that it has a 67% success rate at preventing recidivism where they intervene). However, the same article cites Tasmania’s recidivism rate as 42%, so…
