Inmates facing long wait for a GED

“About 12 percent of Ohio prisoners are enrolled in education programs, with more than 2,100 receiving a high-school equivalence certificate last year.

A new report by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee also shows that female prisoners seem far more interested in furthering their education than men do. About 3 in 4 inmates at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville are involved in education programs, far more than their male counterparts at any institution.”

  1. Donna Anderson says:

How do you know the men (who didn’t sign up) aren’t interested? What if they have undiagnosed, hidden LDs? They would NOT get a proper eval in prison and they wouldn’t be in a position to get a good independent, comprehensive evaluation. Many KNOW they will NOT succeed in obtaining the GED, but they don’t know why. Where do you suppose the dyslexics are………or those with discalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD, processing disorders? A GED is a test of acquired knowledge and skills. A person with dyscalculia might have super intelligence, but was not presented with an enabling curriculum (in order to acquire the skills.) These special service providers are NOT supplied. These folks are “curriculum casualties” suffering the consequences of a disabling education!!!!

  2. Thanks for the comment. The original report is currently not available, but I don’t believe it says anything about one gender being more interested than another. I think it’s actually the case that the number of teachers that are hired at each facility is the limiting factor. If there were unlimited seats, you would obviously see a lot more interest at every facility.
